challenge three - interactive door
key decisions :
effectiveness & solutions :
LO1: Ability to develop numerous core interactions that are fundamental aspects of the wide
majority of VR experiences
LO2: Building of a further understanding of game engine development, adding to technical skills
portfolio
LO3: Enhancement of personal development pipeline and professional practice through working
with consistency and regularly documenting their progress
LO4: Improved ability to critically reflect on VR designs and solutions, to evaluate existing VR
experiences with more critical insights, and to self-reflect on their own learning journey more
effectively
hello my name is rebecca and i will be talkign about the three technical and design challenges that i have worked on for this module. Displayed are the design challenges and highlighted are the ones that i ended up attempting.
The first challenge is the in-game painting tool where the player can pick up a brush amd paint onto the canvas. This is the challenge i spent the most of my time on, this is because i believed that it would be the most difficult to complete. I spent a lot of time doing research to see exactly how I could code something in unreal to allow a user to paint on a canvas, through this research i discovered the use of 'canvas render targets' and how they are used especially for allowing a user to draw on something in game. There were a lot of different parts to making this code work to the point where I became stuck on how to make it so the user can paint using a paintbrush. Instead of spending time focusing on this detail, i tried seeing how i could make it so when the user holds the right trigger on their controls it would paint on the canvas instead. In the future I want to see if i can expand on this and try to make it so the player can paint with different colours.
in my second challenge i worked on making an interactive door system, referencing back to my previous experience, i am using similar code that i had done before however knowing my skills have improved since then, i have made some alterations to my code and have made it so the player can open the door themselves using the right trigger rather than having the door open automatically. A challenged I faced during this was again, trying to figure out how to allow the user to interact with the door and I solved this by doing some research and figuring out that I needed to alter the vrgamemode(self) to allow the user to use the controller's triggers in game.
My third and final design challenge that i worked on was creating a small domestic room in which some of the furniture can be re-textured in game, I did this by first working out how to retexture actors in unreal and then applying that knowledge to the small art studio / bedroom that I had previously put together for the two other design challenges. At first I wasn't going to go forward with this challenge because I was working towards making an interactive button and lever system however I didn't see how it was going to fit the theme of my project and also I wanted to try something new especially with allowing the user to be able to alter things in game.
Overall I am happy with how my project turned out, something I want to improve on for next time is definitely spending more time on broader research instead of trying to find niche information. Although overall I can say that I have taught myself a few things in the process of working through these design challenges. Thank you.
